By sundown, it was clear they were not going to reach Tard tonight. Although the two wolf-carriers they had obtained were at least five times faster than a human, they had lost so much time fighting the monsters that they missed their chance to reach Tard by nightfall.

As soon as a new village appeared on the horizon, Siris yelled out that they had no other choice but to stay there for the night.

Medani wondered how this tiny settlement could rightfully be called a village. It was even smaller than the last and did not even have an inn. Where would they stay?

Siris persuaded some farmers to let them stay in their barn by giving them a few coins. He also obtained a few slices of bread, a small piece of a curd cheese, and a cup of fresh milk for dinner. He handed it to Medani with a shrug.

Medani was grateful. She had no problem swallowing even the crummiest food these days. The meager meal disappeared in the blink of an eye.

The hayloft she was offered for her night’s rest looked lovely. The hay was soft and had a nice smell. After a few minutes, however, she realized that her whole body was itchy and she couldn’t stop sneezing. She spent half an hour forcing herself to sleep, but it was almost impossible to keep her eyes closed. Medani finally jumped down from the hay and went into the open air.

The wolves were curled on the ground in carefree sleep. Medani felt a little bit envious. The wind was rustling through their gray fur and the animals just whined from time to time in their dreams.

A soft voice murmured nearby. “Miriam…”

Medani flinched when this woeful sound reached her ears. She turned and found Siris leaning on the barn wall with empty eyes, watching the cloudy night sky.

“Who is this Miriam?”

Siris just shook his head. “Just someone from a very distant past. Doesn’t matter. Really.”

He rose and walked away, avoiding any further prying.

Medani knew she would not see him until morning. She went back inside the building and dove into the hay. She was not able to fall asleep at all, not only because of the itchy hay but because she could not stop thinking about what Siris was hiding from her and, probably, from everyone. She had a vague feeling that even Nytrio might not know who was or still is this “Miriam.” From the name, she knew it must be a woman. She could only guess what kind of person was hiding under this name.
